agentic commercePayment provider Worldline and ING, together with Mastercard, have successfully completed the first end-to-end agentic payment transaction in production in Europe. This was announced during Money 20/20.

The transaction took place between an ING cardholder and a merchant in the Netherlands. The solution operates on the same underlying infrastructure in Belgium and runs via the Mastercard network, using the respective secure authentication and authorization mechanisms.

Worldline calls the agentic commerce transaction a milestone demonstrating that AI agent-initiated and -authenticated payments can function end-to-end across multiple European markets. With this, agentic commerce within reach and shifts according to Worldline and ING the question from 'can it work' to 'can it be trusted at scale'.

In the transaction that was executed, the ING cardholder searched online for a gift. A seller's AI agent presented an offer that fit within the established budget. After explicit agreement from the consumer, the agent completed the transaction. Authentication was handled via established secure mechanisms, with ING, as the issuing bank, playing a central role in authorizing the transaction and Worldline processing the payment end-to-end. The transaction contains explicit indicators that clarify the agentic nature of the transaction, so that processors can take this into account.

“We are seeing the next evolution of digital commerce, where trusted agents can act on behalf of consumers in a secure and transparent manner. This milestone demonstrates how Mastercard Agent Pay enables scalable, interoperable agentic payments, built on network-wide guidelines and strengthened by strong authentication and protection at the network level. Mastercard is laying the foundation for how this ecosystem can operate at scale: agents are onboarded within defined standards and controls, merchants are supported via consistent integration frameworks, and issuers retain full visibility and control over every transaction. With Agent Pay, we ensure that innovation scales securely, built on trust, aligned with the ecosystem, and ready for deployment in the real world,” said Brice van de Walle, Executive Vice President, Core Payments Europe, Mastercard.
