Accessibility statements: government does not comply with its own rules

Of the 108 government apps with an accessibility statement, only one fully meets all requirements: the Message Box app. This is evident from the answer of State Secretary Raymond Knops to parliamentary questions from the VVD. Knops indicates that he continues to encourage governments to work on it. That writes AGConnect today.

Stichting Appt announced earlier this year that a large part of more than nine hundred government apps do not meet accessibility requirements for users with disabilities. On that the VVD asked parliamentary questions, says AGConnect. The VVD wanted to know, among other things, how many apps are accessible or have an accessibility statement. A total of 23 accessibility statements for apps appear to have been published on June 108. Only one of the apps fully meets the accessibility requirements. 22 apps are partially compliant. 27 apps have taken 'first measures' and the other 58 apps do not meet the accessibility requirements.

In December 2020, Knops announced that special booster teams would come to actively approach governments to arrange accessibility statements. That has not yet led to an improvement. Since September 2020, governments are required to publish standardized accessibility statements. This provides insight into how they perform in the field of digital accessibility. However, there is a lack of sanctions for governments that do not comply.
