Telemarketing in Belgium leads to an increasing number of complaints

In Belgium, the Belgian Do-not-call-me-register does not seem to work properly. Those who have their data recorded there still receive telephone calls from telemarketers too often. The Belgian register, which has existed since 2015, contains data from one and a half million Belgians.

But since the introduction of the register, the number of complaints (via hotline.belgium.be) to the Economic Inspectorate (EI) about this increase: from 3.660 complaints in 2016 to 6.858 in 2018 and to 9.223 in 2021. The EI carried out inspections at sixty telemarketing companies. Compared to 3 million calls, more than 31.000 calls were made to people on the list. Other breaches were identified in more than half a million calls.

The EI issued warnings to the telemarketers and imposed fines of up to €60.000. (De Standaard)
