The Ghent police want to test a chatbot to help residents more easily, for example to make a report, according to the Flemish radio station Radio2.
This concerns the first use of a chatbot in the Belgian police; a project proposal has been approved by the Ghent city council. The Ghent police want to experiment with a similar chatbot as a chatbot Wout, which has been running in the Netherlands for three years. The project proposal fits in with a call from the federal government to start new projects that "contribute to better proximity and accessibility of the police".
According to Casper Van den Broek of the Dutch Studio Winegum, the company behind chatbot Wout, many people have bad experiences with chatbots. But if they are well developed, they certainly provide added value, says Van den Broek: “The bot is trained with thousands of sentences to recognize people's needs and help them further.” Wout could answer almost 90 percent of the questions, in other cases he would be referred to live contact.” Wout can also process reports about noise pollution and illegal parking.
As far as the Ghent police are concerned, it is still unclear which partner they will collaborate with. (VRT)
