Meta, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, among others, is said to have plans to sell CRM company Kustomer, bought in February 2022 for $ 1 billion. Meta started the purchase back in 2020, but took a long time to get the deal approved.
The purchase was probably related to the strategy to turn WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger into a platform where e-commerce players can do business directly with consumers: the model of WeChat, for example. In that kind of activity, there would be an important role for a CRM provider. Meta now has via The Wall Street Journal announced that it wants to focus on the most promising business messaging models, including monetizing WhatsApp, and to leave the CRM part to third parties.
It is expected that Meta will have to lose a lot in the sale of Kustomer; another option is for the company to become independent and go public. Kustomer serves customers such as Abercromby & Fitch and Ring, among others.
