A 21-year-old Amsterdam resident is suspected by the Public Prosecution Service of being involved in the fraud of more than twenty elderly people, in which money and jewelry were allegedly stolen. The man is said to have obtained the victims' personal data through his temporary work at a company's customer service department. That has announced by the Public Prosecution Service.
The police suspect that the suspect has shared the personal information with others, with or without payment. In collaboration with these others, he then allegedly committed criminal offenses, such as fraud and theft from homes. Victims were called and visited at home by people posing as police officers or employees of a telecom company.
This is the first time in Amsterdam that a customer service employee is believed to have deliberately unlawfully used personal data from the customer database of the company for which he worked through an employment agency. It appears that data from the company's database was used to select victims from across the country, gain their trust, and then take money and goods from them. The company has filed a report against the man for computer hacking.
On April 22, the 21-year-old Amsterdam resident was arrested by the police and was given full restrictions. These were lifted at the beginning of this week. During the arrest, the suspect's phones were seized and examined. The police then found photos with personal data of very elderly customers of the company and a group chat from which it is clear that the participants are guilty of criminal offenses.
Police investigations are still ongoing. The suspect's pre-trial detention has been extended by ninety days by the council chamber of the court in Amsterdam. (Prosecution)
