The British regulator ICO has fined the company Elderly Aids Ltd 190.000 pounds (approximately 220.000 euros) for large-scale telemarketing targeting the elderly. Elderly Aids is a supplier of blocking equipment to combat harassing phone calls.
The company has been reprimanded by the regulator for making 758.053 unsolicited sales calls over an eight-month period in 2024 and 2025. The numbers of the consumers who were contacted were registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), the British equivalent of the Dutch Do-Not-Call Register. Calling TPS-registered numbers is prohibited in the United Kingdom unless the consumer has given explicit consent. This was not the case for any of the people called.
The TPS received twenty complaints regarding Elderly Aids. Complainants reported aggressive and misleading sales tactics, in which callers also failed to identify themselves.
According to the ICO, Elderly Aids did not cooperate with the investigation and ignored requests for information, while the illegal telemarketing campaign continued unabated. Furthermore, documents from Companies House, the British Companies Register, show that the company attempted to have itself removed from the register three months after the start of the telemarketing campaign. That attempt was blocked following an objection.
