In the first half of this year, the Fraud Helpdesk received 15.106 phishing reports. That is more than five times as many as last year.
The figures show that the channels used by criminals change regularly. Realistic messages containing personal details of intended victims are received via both email and WhatsApp; the latter channel has gained popularity in recent months. The Fraud Helpdesk is also seeing an increase in total financial damage to victims: it has more than doubled.
Nearly 95 percent of reporters indicated having had telephone contact with the scammer. In doing so, criminals exploited current topics such as home batteries, solar panels, energy conservation, and changes to the net metering scheme.
The Fraudehelpdesk calls on organizations, companies, and government bodies to clearly inform customers and citizens about their procedures, so that people can more easily verify whether a request is legitimate. The Fraudehelpdesk also asks organizations and companies to actively warn when their names are being misused. According to the organization, strengthening digital resilience is the best remedy.
