British telecom and IT service provider BT Group has announced that it may close EE contact centres at Doxford Park in Sunderland. More than 450 employees work at the location for brands such as EE, Plusnet, and Openreach.
According to the company, most of the 460 employees will be able to be transferred to other branches.
The motive for the move is that the company “can optimize the office building and unlock value as part of a modernization program,” according to the company. The closure is part of a larger operation which already started in 2021. BT may also close contact centers in Accrington and Blackburn this year, presumably as of October 31, 2026.
BT aims to reduce the total workforce to between 75.000 and 90.000 employees by 2030; as of March 2025, the company already had 85.300 employees, a decrease of 6.400 compared to the previous year.
BT acquired telecom company EE in 2016 for 12,5 billion pounds.
